How to Get Better Online Translations: Urdu, English and More
Online translators can turn a paragraph from one language into another in seconds. They are very useful, but the quality depends a lot on the text you give them. These tips help you get clearer and more accurate results, whether you are translating Urdu, English, Arabic or any other language.
How machine translation works
A translation tool does not understand text the way a person does. It compares your sentence with patterns learned from huge amounts of translated text and chooses the most likely wording. This works well for common sentences and less well for rare words, local expressions and unusual grammar.
Prepare your text first
- Keep sentences short. One idea per sentence translates better than a long sentence with many parts.
- Fix spelling and punctuation. A missing comma or a wrong letter can change the meaning completely.
- Avoid idioms and slang. A phrase such as "break the ice" may be translated word for word and make no sense.
- Write names clearly. Names of people and places are sometimes translated by mistake, so check them in the result.
Check the result
Translate the result back into your original language. If the meaning changed a lot, rewrite the original sentence in simpler words and try again. If you know a little of the target language, read the result slowly and look for words that seem out of place.
Right-to-left languages
Urdu, Arabic, Persian and Hebrew are written from right to left. When these are mixed with English words or numbers, the order can look strange on screen even when the translation is correct. Our Language Translator shows right-to-left output correctly.
When not to rely on a machine
Use a professional human translator for legal contracts, medical instructions, immigration papers and anything where a mistake could cause harm or cost money. Machine translation is best for understanding the general meaning and for casual messages.
Protect your privacy
Most online translators send your text to a server. Do not enter passwords, bank details or personal documents.
