How to Make a QR Code for Free: Links, Wi-Fi and Contact Details
QR codes are everywhere: on shop counters, menus, posters, business cards and bills. A QR code is a square pattern that stores a small amount of information, such as a web address, which a phone camera reads instantly. The format was created in 1994 by Denso Wave in Japan to track car parts, and today anyone can make one for free.
Steps to make a QR code
- Decide what the code should hold, for example a website link.
- Open our QR Code Generator and paste the link or text into the box.
- Choose the size and, if you like, the colours.
- Press Download PNG to save the image.
- Scan it with your own phone before you print or share it.
What you can store
- Website link: the most common use. Write the full address starting with https://.
- Plain text: a short message or a code.
- Phone number: write it as tel:+923001234567.
- Email: write it as mailto:name@example.com.
- Wi-Fi network: write it as WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;; and most phones offer to join the network when scanned.
Understanding error correction
A QR code contains extra data so it can still be read if part of it is dirty or damaged. There are four levels: Low recovers about 7 percent, Medium about 15 percent, Quartile about 25 percent and High about 30 percent. Higher levels make the pattern denser, so pick Medium for screens and High for printed codes that may get scratched.
Tips for codes that scan every time
- Use dark dots on a light background.
- Keep the blank border around the code.
- Print it at least 2 cm wide.
- Use a short link, because less data makes a simpler code.
- Test it on both an Android phone and an iPhone.
Safety
Anyone who scans a code can see what it contains, so never put passwords or private details in a public code. Also be careful when scanning unknown codes in public places, because a link can lead to a fake website. Check the address your phone shows before you open it.
