What is the Hijri calendar?
The Hijri calendar is the Islamic lunar calendar, used to decide Ramadan, Eid, Hajj and other religious dates. Its twelve months follow the moon: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qadah and Dhul Hijjah.
This converter changes a normal date into its Hijri equivalent and back again, using the Umm al-Qura calendar built into your browser.
Why Hijri and Gregorian dates drift
A Hijri year has about 354 or 355 days, roughly ten or eleven days shorter than a Gregorian year, so Islamic dates move earlier through the seasons each year. For example, 10 October 2026 falls around 29 Rabi al-Thani 1448 in the Umm al-Qura calendar.
Umm al-Qura is a calculated calendar used in Saudi Arabia. In Pakistan and many other countries the start of each month is decided by local moon sighting, so the real date can differ by a day. Treat Ramadan and Eid dates as a guide and confirm them with your local announcement.
Everyday uses
Many Muslim families use the Hijri calendar for religious dates and for events such as Ramadan, Eid, Islamic New Year and Ashura. Official documents in some countries show both calendars, and people sometimes need to convert a birth date or marriage date from one system to the other. Students of Islamic studies use converters to understand historical dates. Because months begin with the new moon, the exact start can depend on the announcement made where you live, so use this tool for planning and confirm important dates locally.
