What is GPA?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It turns your letter grades into points, usually on a 4.0 scale, and averages them, weighting each course by its credit hours. A three-credit course therefore counts more than a one-credit lab.
Students use a GPA calculator to track a semester, plan how much to improve, or prepare scholarship and admission applications.
How GPA is calculated
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add the results, and divide by the total credit hours. On this calculator A is 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, B- is 2.7, C+ is 2.3, C is 2.0, C- is 1.7, D+ is 1.3, D is 1.0 and F is 0.
Example: an A in a 3-credit course gives 12 points, a B+ in a 4-credit course gives 13.2, and a B in a 2-credit course gives 6. The total is 31.2 points over 9 credits, so the GPA is about 3.47.
Using your GPA wisely
GPA matters for scholarships, honours lists, transfers and some job applications, but it is only one part of your profile. Use the calculator to set realistic goals: if your current GPA is 3.2 and you want 3.5, enter the grades you would need in upcoming courses. Credit hours weight the result, so a strong grade in a high-credit course helps most. Always confirm your institution's grading scale, because some schools use different points for plus and minus grades or give A+ a higher value.
How to use it
- Enter a course name if you like. It is optional.
- Select the letter grade you received or expect.
- Enter the credit hours for that course.
- Press Add course for more rows, then Calculate GPA.
Practical tips
- Use expected grades to see what GPA you could reach if you improve in one subject.
- Include only courses your school counts. Pass or fail courses are often excluded.
- Schools differ in how they treat A+ and plus or minus grades, so check your own policy.
- For a cumulative GPA, enter the courses from all semesters together.
More features
The new planner works out the GPA you need next semester to reach a target CGPA. Enter your current CGPA, the credits you have completed, your target and the credits you will take, and it shows the average you must score, or tells you if the target is out of reach.
