What is a countdown timer?

A countdown timer counts backwards from a time you choose until it reaches zero, then sounds an alarm. It is useful whenever a task has a fixed length: boiling eggs, steeping tea, a practice exam, a workout interval, a presentation slot or a household rule such as 30 minutes of screen time.

This version lets you set hours, minutes and seconds, pause and resume, and shows the remaining time in your browser tab title so you can work in another tab and still see how long is left.

Choosing a sensible time

Pick the length from the task itself. Soft-boiled eggs need about six minutes and hard-boiled about ten to twelve, tea usually three to five minutes, and a short workout interval might be 30 to 45 seconds. For study, short blocks of 25 to 50 minutes with a break work well for many people.

The alarm plays only when the countdown reaches zero and only after you have started the timer. Make sure your device volume is on. Some phones pause background tabs to save battery, so keep this page open for important timings.

Everyday uses

Parents use countdown timers for homework blocks and screen time because a visible clock ends arguments about five more minutes. Teachers use them for quizzes and group activities. Cooks run several timers for multi-step recipes, and fitness fans use them for rest between sets and for plank or stretching holds. Because the remaining time appears in the tab title, you can keep working in a document or a video call and still glance up to check the clock without breaking your concentration.

How to use it

  1. Enter the hours, minutes and seconds you need.
  2. Press Start or the Space bar and watch the display count down.
  3. Press Pause to hold the time, then Start to continue.
  4. When it reaches zero the alarm sounds. Press Reset (or R) to start again.
